Summary

A discharge decision on the 2023 general budget of the EU for the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). The amendments note the EDPS operating budget and its supervisory role over data processing by Union institutions, bodies and agencies, formal legislative consultations and opinions, standards for external contractors, a significant increase in staff mission costs, budget implementation, and budgetary pressure linked to inflation, energy costs and Russia's war against Ukraine.

Deplores the EDPS's reprimand to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency when exchanging data with Europol on individuals suspected of cross-border crimes, considering the severe consequences of the lack of data sharing between agencies, which is essential for combating organised crime and addressing illegal migration, upholding both national and European security needs;

Expresses its concern about the significant increase in the final budget adopted for the EDPS, and deplores the fact that this increase, of 12,06 % between 2022 and 2023, well above the inflation rate, is the cause of budgetary waste such as the 54 % increase in the budget allocated to public communication and promotion activities;
