Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, which states Parliament's political position without itself changing EU law, Parliament objects to Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/2627 authorising the placing on the market of products containing, consisting of or produced from genetically modified cotton COT102 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. The text notes that the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed and the Appeal Committee both delivered no opinion, and it raises outstanding concerns about the toxicity of the insecticidal Bt proteins, effects on non-target organisms, and the presence of an antibiotic resistance marker gene that deactivates hygromycin B. It recalls that Directive 2001/18/EC requires antibiotic resistance markers to be identified and phased out, and that several Member States raised critical comments. The resolution frames its objection around gaps in the EFSA risk assessment and the Union's aim of reducing dependency on imported feed.
