Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/1828 renewing the authorisation for the placing on the market of feed containing, consisting of and of food and feed products produced from genetically modified maize MON 810 pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council and repealing Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/1207
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament objects to Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/1828, which renewed the authorisation for placing on the market feed and food and feed products produced from genetically modified maize MON 810 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. The text states that the GM maize is modified to produce Bt insecticidal toxins and raises outstanding questions about possible effects of Bt toxins on the human immune system and on non-target organisms, alongside critical comments submitted by Member States to EFSA. It observes that the Standing Committee and Appeal Committee delivered no opinion, meaning the authorisation was not supported by a qualified majority of Member States, and criticises the Commission for continuing to authorise GMOs despite these democratic shortcomings and Parliament's repeated objections. Parliament considers that the Implementing Decision exceeds the implementing powers provided for in the Regulation and directs its objection to the Commission.
