Presentation by the Commission President-elect of the College of Commissioners and its programme

2024/2877(RSP)·RSP·Official procedure file ↗

Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, tabled by The Left Group to wind up the debate on the presentation by the Commission President-elect of the College of Commissioners and their programme, Parliament strongly condemns procedural violations and the disregard for its own Rules of Procedure at each stage of the vetting and screening of the College of Commissioners. It criticises the scrutiny of the Commissioners-designate's declarations of financial interests as superficial and conducted behind closed doors, and notes that during the vetting process 7 evaluations and 26 assessments were postponed without justification. It deplores the postponements and lack of transparency of the evaluation meetings, which it says favour opaque political bargaining over democratic accountability, and condemns the fact that meetings were called with two to three hours' notice, leaving some coordinators unable to participate. It states that, as the EU's only directly elected body tasked with holding the executive accountable, Parliament has instead undermined its own integrity and credibility. This motion for a resolution was rejected on 27 November 2024.
