Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addressed the situation in Hong Kong, notably the cases of Jimmy Lai and the 45 activists convicted under the national security law. The text condemns the sentencing of pro-democracy activists, calls for the repeal of the National Security Law and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, and urges the Hong Kong Government to release all pro-democracy activists, including Jimmy Lai, and to drop the charges against them. It calls on Member States to suspend extradition treaties and on the Council to impose targeted sanctions on named officials, review Hong Kong's favourable customs treatment and reconsider the status of the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office in Brussels, and calls for an EU legal defence fund for democracy activists. Parliament adopted the resolution on 2024-11-28.
