The human rights situation in Kyrgyzstan, in particular the case of Temirlan Sultanbekov
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the human rights situation in Kyrgyzstan, in particular the case of Kyrgyzstan Social Democrats party leader Temirlan Sultanbekov. It expresses concern at the reasons for his detention and the possible political motivation behind the case, and urges the Kyrgyz authorities to immediately release him and other party officials and to adopt alternative measures to detention while respecting their right to due process. Parliament urges the Kyrgyz government to halt its campaign of intimidation and legal persecution against opposition parties, independent media and journalists, expresses concern at the adoption of a Russian-style foreign agents law, and calls for all charges against named human rights defenders and journalists to be dropped. It calls on the Kyrgyz authorities to respect human rights and democratic standards in line with the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus, and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission, the VP/HR, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, the Member States, the UN Human Rights Council and the Kyrgyz authorities.
