The need for actions to address the continued oppression and fake elections in Belarus

2024/3014(RSP)·RSP·Official procedure file ↗

Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the continued oppression and fake elections in Belarus, describing the systematic repression of political opponents, civil society, human rights defenders, journalists and others under the rule of Aliaksandr Lukashenka following the fraudulent 2020 presidential election. It records that over 1,250 political prisoners remain detained in conditions endangering their lives, that documented violations amount to crimes against humanity under international law, and that the regime planned sham presidential elections on 26 January 2025 in an environment of severe repression. The resolution notes the detention of a local member of staff of the EU delegation in Belarus and the regime's use of anti-extremism laws against independent media. It sets out Parliament's condemnation of the situation and the need for EU action in response to the ongoing repression and the illegitimate electoral process.
