Summary

The dossier sets EU strategic objectives for the 20th Conference of the Parties to CITES. Amendments reference CITES Appendices I and II, resolutions on hunting trophies, elephants and ivory, tigers and rhinoceroses, captive-bred and ranched specimens, compliance and enforcement, wildlife trafficking and corruption, IUCN and biodiversity frameworks, marine and freshwater biodiversity, and the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

    Current text

    57. Urges the Commission and the Member States, in line with the EU action plan against wildlife trafficking, to apply increased scrutiny to the import of hunting trophies derived from CITES-listed species; calls for extending the requirements for import permits across hunting trophies listed in Annex B to Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97, unless scientifically proven otherwise;

Calls for a proportionate, case-by-case approach to hunting trophy imports in the EU, ensuring they originate from legal hunting activities; stresses that legal hunting can contribute to biodiversity conservation, habitat protection and the economic and social development of rural communities;
