The draft Commission implementing decision authorising the placing on the market of products containing, consisting of or produced from genetically modified soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788 pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament objects to the draft Commission implementing decision authorising the placing on the market of genetically modified soybean MON 87705 x MON 87708 x MON 89788 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. It notes that the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed delivered no opinion and that EFSA had initially been unable to conclude on the soybean's safety before adopting a favourable statement in 2024. The resolution raises concerns that the soybean is engineered to tolerate glyphosate-based and dicamba herbicides, arguing that herbicide-tolerant crops lead to increased complementary herbicide use, weed resistance and adverse effects on soil, water, biodiversity and human and animal health, and it cites studies on the carcinogenicity concerns regarding dicamba and glyphosate. The text criticises the lack of assessment of the complementary herbicide and the outstanding questions on residues, consistent with Parliament's previous objections to GMO authorisations.
