Media freedom in Georgia, particularly the case of Mzia Amaglobeli

2025/2752(RSP)·RSP·Official procedure file ↗

Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses media freedom in Georgia and the case of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, co-founder of the Batumelebi and Netgazeti outlets, who was arrested during pro-European protests on 12 January 2025 and reportedly undertook a 38-day hunger strike. It demands her immediate and unconditional release and the withdrawal of all charges, and strongly condemns what it calls the Georgian Dream regime's systemic assault on democratic institutions, the political opposition, independent media, civil society and judicial independence. Parliament urges the Georgian authorities to release all political prisoners and other illegally detained persons, calls for the repeal of repressive legislation including the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and asks the EU to step up support for independent media and civil society. It reiterates its call on Member States to impose bilateral sanctions against Georgian Dream leaders and officials responsible for democratic backsliding, and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission and other bodies.
