The post-election killings and the deteriorating human rights situation in Tanzania, including the case of imprisoned opposition leader Tundu Lissu
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament denounces the violence and excessive use of force by Tanzanian security forces following the October 2025 elections, which resulted in deaths, injuries, mass arrests and reported mass graves, and condemns the government's denial of wrongdoing. It condemns the arbitrary and politically motivated detention of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who was charged with treason, and calls for his immediate and unconditional release and access to family, lawyers and medical care. The text urges the government to cease crackdowns and arbitrary arrests, release those arbitrarily detained and lift internet and media restrictions, and calls for a prompt, independent investigation, including through an African-led international commission of inquiry. It considers the elections neither free nor fair, calls on the Council to consider sanctions against those responsible, and urges Tanzania to abolish the death penalty and engage in inclusive political dialogue.
