Grave political situation in Guinea-Bissau after the coup of 26 November
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, adopted on 18 December 2025, Parliament unequivocally condemns the seizure of power by a military group led by General Horta N'Tam in Guinea-Bissau on 26 November 2025, which suspended the electoral process following general elections held on 23 November 2025 from which the main opposition party PAIGC had been barred. It rejects the unconstitutional change of government and calls for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and the electoral process, while condemning disproportionate use of force against the population and reported human rights violations against protesters and journalists. The text demands the immediate and unconditional release of named opposition leaders and all others arbitrarily detained, and calls on the electoral commission to publish verified results without military or political interference. It urges the EU to review its agreements and funding so that cooperation funds do not strengthen the junta, and calls on the Council to consider restrictive measures against those responsible for the coup and for human rights violations.
