Summary

This own-initiative report reviews EU legislation on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) and related feed and food controls. The amendments note the sharp fall in BSE cases, debate raising age limits for testing bovine animals, address lifting the feed ban on processed animal proteins for non-ruminants subject to safeguards against cross-contamination, reject feeding such proteins to ruminants, raise the EU protein deficit, scrapie genetic control, cohort culling, and stricter feed controls.
