Possible extension of geographical indication protection of the European Union to non-agricultural products

This own-initiative report concerns the possible extension of EU geographical indication (GI) protection to non-agricultural products. Amendments weigh an EU-level GI registration system for non-agricultural goods against existing intellectual property rights such as trademarks, its links to the common commercial policy, SMEs, regional crafts and heritage, countering counterfeiting, and trade negotiations under the WTO, TRIPS, TTIP and CETA.
