European Media Freedom Act

2022/0277(COD)·9th term·CULT / IMCO / LIBE·COD - Ordinary legislative procedure (ex-codecision procedure)·CompletedProcedure completed
Rapporteur (the Member appointed to lead Parliament's work on this text): VERHEYEN Sabine (EPP)
Summary

The European Media Freedom Act is an ordinary legislative procedure, meaning Parliament and the Council of the EU decide together and the result is binding EU law. It was handled by the Culture and Education and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs committees, in the areas of the internal market, audiovisual services and media freedom and pluralism. The tabled amendments concern an independent secretariat and bureau supporting the Board, its tasks under this Regulation and Directive 2010/13/EU, the treatment of video-sharing and online platforms under Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, a broad definition of state advertising, protection of journalists and public service media, audience measurement, and the role of national regulatory authorities and ERGA. It shares subjects such as media freedom with related files including "Media concentration and pluralism in the EU".

39 roll-call votes

In plenary, Parliament usually votes in steps: first on amendments to the text (sometimes split into parts, so Members can accept one half of a sentence and reject the other), then on the text as a whole. The “main vote” is the one that adopts or rejects the text itself. Each vote below shows exactly which step it was. How voting works →
