2024/2803(RSP)·RSP·Official procedure file ↗

Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament states its position on the deteriorating situation of women in Afghanistan following the adoption of the law on the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. It condemns the Taliban's decree and enforcement of Sharia law, the erasure of women and girls from public life and the reintroduction of public flogging and stoning, and urges Afghanistan's de facto authorities to abolish discriminatory practices, release arbitrarily imprisoned women and girls, and restore women's full participation in public life. The resolution calls for the de facto authorities to be held accountable through the ICC investigation and a UN Independent Investigative Mechanism, asks the VP/HR to initiate new EU sanctions against the Taliban, and urges the EU and Member States to adhere to the Council's five benchmarks and support recognition of gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. It also urges increased humanitarian aid and the granting of humanitarian visas, and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the EU institutions, the Member States, the UN and the de facto Afghan authorities. Adopted on 2024-09-19.
