The case of José Daniel Ferrer García in Cuba
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the case of human rights defender and opposition leader Jose Daniel Ferrer Garcia in Cuba, stating he was detained in July 2021 and has been held in isolation, incommunicado since March 2023 and reportedly in critical condition without access to medical care. It urges the Cuban regime to immediately and unconditionally release Ferrer and all persons politically and arbitrarily detained, and condemns the systematic human rights violations and the torture and ill-treatment perpetrated against political prisoners. It reiterates its call on the Council to apply the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime (the EU Magnitsky Act) against those responsible and refers to the possibility of activating the PDCA suspension clause. Parliament instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Cuban regime, the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative, the Commission, the Member States, the United Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
