The situation in Venezuela

2024/2810(RSP)·RSP·Official procedure file ↗

Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the situation in Venezuela following the presidential election of 28 July 2024, describing an ongoing socio-economic, political and humanitarian crisis and the mass emigration of more than 7.7 million Venezuelans. The text states that Nicolas Maduro's regime has harassed, persecuted and censored activists, journalists and civil society, used politically motivated arbitrary detentions, and disqualified opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado, who had won the opposition primaries, in breach of the Barbados Agreement, with Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia ultimately standing as the candidate of the democratic opposition. It documents electoral irregularities, the persecution of opposition activists and refuge sought in the Argentinian embassy by collaborators of Vente Venezuela. Parliament adopted this resolution on 2024-09-19.
