The case of Bülent Mumay in Türkiye
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, tabled as a joint motion by the PPE, S&D, ECR, Renew, Verts/ALE and The Left groups, Parliament addresses the case of Turkish journalist Bülent Mumay in Türkiye. The text recalls that he was sentenced to 20 months in prison over social media posts and that an Istanbul appeals court upheld the sentence and ordered access to news reports about it to be blocked, presenting this as part of a broader pattern of judicial harassment and censorship of independent media. Parliament condemns the sentence and calls on the Turkish authorities to drop the charges against him and to release all arbitrarily detained media workers and journalists, to restore judicial independence and to respect press freedom. It also calls on the EEAS to support the EU Delegation in intensifying trial observation, and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission, the EEAS and Türkiye's President, Government and Parliament.
