The draft Commission implementing decision authorising the placing on the market of products containing, consisting of or produced from genetically modified maize DP910521 pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament objects to the draft Commission implementing decision that would authorise the placing on the market of products containing, consisting of or produced from genetically modified maize DP910521 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. It notes that the maize produces the Cry1B.34 toxin and is resistant to the herbicide glufosinate, which is classified as toxic to reproduction and whose Union approval expired in 2018, and it criticises the fact that residues of the complementary herbicide and the combinatorial effects of Bt toxins are treated as outside EFSA's remit and are therefore not assessed. The resolution raises concerns about effects on non-target organisms, the herbicide treadmill, and the many critical comments submitted by Member States during consultation. It sets out Parliament's objection to the authorisation and its position that the Commission should not proceed on this basis.
