The case of Jean-Jacques Wondo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the case of Jean-Jacques Wondo, a Belgian-Congolese security, military and political expert who was arrested following a failed coup in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and sentenced to death by a military court in a process condemned for serious violations of due process. Parliament strongly condemns the death sentence and the violations of the right to a fair trial, urges the DRC Government to overturn the sentences, reinstate a moratorium on executions and move towards abolition of the death penalty, and insists on Wondo's immediate release and access to medical treatment. It denounces the misuse of military courts, reiterates its opposition to the death penalty, and calls for systemic judicial reforms. The resolution encourages the EU delegation in Kinshasa, the European External Action Service and Member States' foreign ministers to intensify their engagement with the DRC authorities on human rights and the rule of law.
