The case of Boualem Sansal in Algeria
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament condemns the arrest and detention in Algeria of French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, who was arrested on 16 November 2024 and charged with national security-related offences under Article 87bis of the Algerian Penal Code, and calls for his immediate and unconditional release. It equally condemns the arrests of other activists, political prisoners, journalists and human rights defenders detained for exercising freedom of expression, including journalist Abdelwakil Blamm and writer Tadjadit Mohamed, and calls for their release. Parliament urges the EU institutions and the EU Delegation to raise their concerns publicly with the Algerian authorities and to organise a medical mission to assess Sansal's health. It calls on the Algerian authorities to review repressive laws restricting freedoms, in particular Articles 87bis, 95bis and 196bis of the Penal Code, and states that any renewal of the EU-Algeria Partnership Priorities and future disbursements of EU funds should be conditioned on progress in these areas.
