Democracy and human rights in Thailand, notably the lese-majesty law and deportation of Uyghur refugees
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament condemns the deportation of at least 40 Uyghur refugees from Thailand to China, where it says they risk arbitrary detention, torture and serious human rights violations, and calls on the Thai authorities to halt any further forced returns of refugees, asylum seekers and political dissidents. It urges the Thai Government to grant the UNHCR unrestricted access to detained Uyghur asylum seekers, calls on China to respect the Uyghurs' fundamental rights and ensure transparency about their whereabouts, and calls on Thailand to ratify the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. The resolution calls on the government to amend or repeal Article 112, the lese-majesty provision, and other repressive laws, demands amnesty for MPs and activists prosecuted under those laws, and calls on the Commission to leverage free trade agreement negotiations to press for reforms and the release of political prisoners. Parliament instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission and the Thai and Chinese authorities, and adopted it on 2025-03-13.
