The execution spree in Iran and the confirmation of the death sentences of activists Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament reiterates its opposition to the death penalty and urges the Iranian Government to introduce an immediate moratorium leading to abolition, condemning the confirmation by Iran's Supreme Court of the death sentences against activists Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani and calling for their release. It condemns what it calls an unprecedented rise in executions and the systematic targeting of human rights activists and minorities, including Christians, Baha'is, Kurds and Baluchis, and calls for the release of individuals detained on account of their religion or belief. Parliament demands the immediate release and repatriation of EU nationals held in Iran, naming Cecile Kohler, Jacques Paris and Ahmadreza Djalali, and condemns Iran's use of hostage diplomacy. It calls on the Council and Member States to make abolition of the death penalty and the release of political prisoners a condition for improving relations, reiterates its call to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation, and encourages support for Iranian civil society. The resolution is forwarded to the Council, the Commission, the VP/HR and Iranian authorities.
