Violations of religious freedom in Tibet
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament condemns what it describes as repressive assimilation policies in the People's Republic of China and their violations of human rights in Tibet, which it says seek to eliminate distinct Tibetan religious and cultural traditions, and calls for a clear separation between state and religion in China. It firmly opposes any attempt by the Chinese Government to interfere in the selection of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leaders, including the Dalai Lama, and expresses concern over the suspicious death in custody of the religious leader Tulku Hungkar Dorje, calling for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation with international oversight. Parliament condemns the persecution of Tibetan religious and cultural leaders and transnational repression, calls for the suspension of extradition treaties with the PRC, and demands that the EU impose sanctions on officials responsible for human rights violations in Tibet. It urges the PRC to release all religious and political prisoners, including the rightful Panchen Lama and Ilham Tohti, and calls on the EU and Member States to raise these cases with the PRC and Vietnam. The resolution is forwarded to the EUSR, the governments of the PRC and Vietnam, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Central Tibetan Administration.
