The case of Dr Ahmadreza Djalali in Iran
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the case of Dr Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian specialist in emergency medicine and scholar at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Università del Piemonte Orientale, who was arrested in 2016 and sentenced to death on espionage charges following a trial the resolution describes as grossly unfair and based on a confession extracted under torture. It calls on Iran to release him and all political prisoners, to impose a moratorium on executions and to abolish the death penalty, and urges Iran to grant him immediate access to specialised medical care, legal representation and family contact. Parliament calls on Sweden, other Member States and the European External Action Service to intensify diplomatic efforts and adopt targeted measures over Iran's detention of EU nationals, and reiterates its call on the Council to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation. It asks the VP/HR to raise Djalali's case publicly and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Government of Iran, the VP/HR, the Commission, the Member States and the United Nations.
