2025/2860(RSP)·RSP·Official procedure file ↗

Resolution on a topical subject.

Summary

In this non-legislative resolution, a joint motion tabled by the PPE, S&D, ECR, Renew and The Left groups, Parliament addresses the detention of EU citizens in the occupied areas of Cyprus. It strongly condemns the unlawful and politically motivated detention of five Greek Cypriot citizens by the Turkish military occupying regime, who were detained on 19 July 2025 while visiting their property, and calls for their immediate and unconditional release. The resolution urges Turkey to provide the detainees with immediate medical care and to fully respect human rights under international law, and it urges the Commission and the European External Action Service to take all necessary measures, including considering punitive measures, to secure their release. It also condemns Turkey's continued occupation of northern Cyprus and instructs Parliament's President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission, the VP/HR and the governments and parliaments of the Member States and of Turkey. It was adopted on 2025-09-11.
