Post-election situation in Uganda and threats against opposition leader Bobi Wine
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament strongly condemns the conduct of Uganda's 15 January 2026 elections and the crackdown on political opposition, civil society, journalists and protesters, and condemns the harassment of and threats to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) as well as the killing of NUP supporter Mesach Okello. It urges the Ugandan authorities to end all violence and arbitrary detention, to immediately and unconditionally release those detained including Dr Kizza Besigye, to stop military trials of civilians, to drop politically motivated charges, and to disclose the whereabouts of missing persons. It also urges an end to arbitrary suspensions of civil society groups and internet restrictions and calls for comprehensive electoral and institutional reforms. Parliament calls on the EU and its Member States to review cooperation with and assistance for Uganda, to implement targeted sanctions, and to prioritise support for civil society, human rights and LGBTIQ+ defenders and journalists, and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the Council, the Commission, the VP/HR, the African Union and the Ugandan authorities.
