Case of Elene Khoshtaria and political prisoners under the Georgian Dream Regime
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament strongly condemns the politically motivated detention of opposition figure Elene Khoshtaria and all others targeted for exercising freedom of expression and assembly, and the systematic persecution of political opponents, journalists and activists by the Georgian Dream regime. It demands Khoshtaria's immediate and unconditional release along with others detained for politically motivated reasons, calls for politically motivated charges to be withdrawn, and expresses concern over the continued detention and health of former President Mikheil Saakashvili. It demands an independent investigation into ill-treatment allegations and reports of chemical weapons use against protesters, and urges the Georgian authorities to repeal restrictive legislation, cease using pre-trial detention for political repression, and ensure judicial independence and due process. Parliament calls on the EU and Member States to impose targeted sanctions and an EU-wide visa ban on regime representatives and their enablers, and instructs its President to forward the resolution to the VP/HR, the Council, the Commission, the Member States, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the Georgian authorities.
