The cases of human rights and environmental defenders Andrie Yunus and Muhammad Rosidi in Indonesia
Resolution on a topical subject.
In this non-legislative resolution, Parliament addresses the cases of human rights and environmental defenders Andrie Yunus and Muhammad Rosidi in Indonesia, noting that Yunus, a representative of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence, was attacked with acid in Jakarta in March 2026, and that environmental activist Rosidi, a campaigner against illegal tin mining, also fell victim to an acid attack in February 2026. It expresses serious concern over the attacks and the wider pattern of violence against defenders, and calls on the authorities to conduct swift, thorough, transparent and independent investigations and to try all perpetrators, including instigators, in civilian courts rather than military jurisdiction. It expresses concern over government plans that risk restricting freedom of expression, including draft laws on disinformation, broadcasting and cybersecurity, and calls on Indonesia to amend repressive legislation and guarantee a safe environment for defenders, journalists and trade unions. The resolution urges the EU and Member States to intensify engagement with Indonesia, particularly on the situation in Papua and West Papua, and to enforce human rights, labour and environmental commitments in their relations.
